Mission Statement

The Association of Raza Educators was established to uphold

the rights and liberties of the Raza community.

Education is essential to the preservation of civil and human rights.

It provides the foundation for all political and economic progress and it must be a basic right of all people.

Making this right a reality is the fundamental objective of A.R.E.

Raza has been and continues to be oppressed by the educational system within the United States.

Therefore, we are obligated to ensure that education serves as a tool for the liberation of our community.

ARE San Diego holds Political Education on Immigration Raids and their Impact on the Raza Community

The San Diego chapter of the Association of Raza Educators held its first general body meeting of 2011 on Thursday January 6 at the Jacob Center in South East San Diego. The general meeting began with a report from each of its Committees which consist of Membership, Education, Scholarship, Finance, Publicity, and Community Outreach. Following the Committee reports the Concilio provided an overview of what ARE is working on in the other areas in the next couple of months and shared the latest issue of Regeneración the newsletter of ARE which can be accessed electronically at,http://razaeducators.org/archives/Regeneracion_Vol2Issue1_Final.pdf . At the conclusion of formal business of the ARE General meeting, there was a Political Education piece on the Immigration Raids, and their impact on the Raza community.

Eviline Torres of the Education Committee presented our guests speakers Benjamin Prado, Unión del Barrio and ARE member, which provided the historical context of the overall immigration issue as it relates to Raza. He explained the historical relationship between the U.S. as an expansionist empire that imposed an illegal political boundary which converted Mexicans into foreigners on our own land. He also provided the underlying political and economic causes for repressive immigration policies which criminalize Raza migrant workers and exposed the raids, with a video presentation, as acts of terrorism directed against Raza workers. Adriana Jasso of the American Friends Service Committee and Coordinator of the Raza Rights Coalition, then presented the case of the S&S Bakery raids where in October of 2010 dozens of workers were arrested, many deported and families separated. Adriana explained the impact of this and other raids on our communities and the need to organize in our defense. Finally, Alexis Castro, daughter of S&S bakery worker who was deported recently, provided testimony on the impact of the raid on her family. She described how ICE entered her house, overturned furniture, arrested her father and how she left to school that morning to return home and find out that her father was in jail for working to providing for their family.

After the presentations there was a question and answer session followed by a breakout session where the general membership dialogued and discussed ways in which educators, parents, and students could develop a response to these raids. ARE recognized that these raids are an act of terrorism towards the Raza community causing psychological trauma, and disrupting the education of our students affected by these raids. There were several proposals among which included: Hosting the Human Rights workshops offered by AFSC at different sites, documenting cases of migra terror when we witness it taking place, getting other educators to take a position against these raids, informing students and their families of their rights, and conducting Community Patrols against ICE (ICE patrols), attend meeting with other progressive groups, attend and denounce the presence of ICE & Border Patrol at the yearly Martin Luther King Parade, oppose ICE & Border Patrol at career day at each respective campus, and support existing Human Rights Committees and their efforts to end Police and Border Patrol collaboration.

As part of the ARE’s Education Committee work, ARE will be developing a Human Rights curriculum to be shared with the membership that will be available later this year. In addition the Education Committee will be following up on these issues with an Immigration Series which include a Tour to the Maquiladoras in Tijuana on March 12, a Tour to Chicano Park on April 16th and a Border Tour on May 14th.

ARE invites educators to join us and become part of history, help us end the criminal immigration raids against our students and families. Join the struggle for Justice, Dignity, and Self-Determination.

Next ARE meeting, Thursday April 14th, 2010 at 6pm
